Iced Matcha Latte Recipe: How to Make This Healthy Refreshing Drink at Home

Spread the love

If you love the creamy, refreshing taste of an Iced Matcha Latte but hate spending $5 (or more!) at your favourite café, you’re in the right place. Making this vibrant green drink at home is not only cheaper but also healthier and incredibly easy.

I’ve been on a ‘get healthy journey’ this year and this is my latest love.

Why Make an Iced Matcha Latte at Home?

There are plenty of reasons to skip the coffee shop and make your own Iced Matcha Latte at home:

• Cost-Effective: A single serving at a café can cost more than making multiple servings at home. Buying matcha powder may seem pricey upfront, but it lasts for weeks.

• Healthier Ingredients: You control the sweetness, the type of milk (dairy or plant-based), and avoid unnecessary additives.

• Customizable: Want it less sweet, creamier, or with a hint of vanilla? You’re in charge of the flavours.

Health Benefits of Matcha

Matcha is packed with nutrients and health benefits:

• Rich in Antioxidants: Matcha contains catechins, which help fight free radicals from damaging your cells and support overall health.

• Boosts Energy & Focus: Thanks to its unique combination of caffeine and L-theanine, matcha provides a calm, sustained energy boost without the jitters or crashes associated with coffee.

• Supports Metabolism: Some studies suggest that matcha can help with fat burning and metabolism support.

Iced Matcha Latte Recipe

Ingredients

• 1–2 teaspoons of matcha powder

• 1/4 cup hot water (to dissolve the matcha)

• 3/4 cup milk (dairy, almond, oat, or your choice. I love it with whole milk and sometimes a dash of cream)

• Ice cubes

• 1–2 teaspoons of sweetener to taste (powdered sugar, sugar, honey, agave, maple syrup, simple syrup, stevia, etc.)

Tools

• A small whisk or a traditional bamboo matcha whisk (chasen)

• A mason jar, glass, or shaker for mixing

• A fine mesh sieve (optional, to sift the matcha for a smoother texture)

Instructions

1. Sift the Matcha Powder: This helps prevent clumps and ensures a smooth latte.

2. Whisk with Hot Water: Add the hot water to the matcha and whisk vigorously in a zigzag motion until frothy.

3. Sweeten to Taste: Stir in your preferred sweetener while the mixture is still warm so it dissolves easily.

4. Add Ice: Fill a glass with ice cubes.

5. Pour in the Milk: Slowly pour your choice of milk over the ice, then add the matcha mixture on top for that beautiful layered effect.

6. Stir & Enjoy: Mix everything together with a straw or spoon, and your homemade Iced Matcha Latte is ready!

Tips for the Best Flavour and Texture

• Use High-Quality Matcha: Ceremonial grade matcha has a vibrant green color and a smooth, slightly sweet flavour.

• Whisk Properly: A bamboo whisk helps achieve a signature frothy top, but a regular small whisk or even a milk frother works in a pinch.

• Adjust the Sweetness: Start with a small amount of sweetener and add more as needed. Matcha has an earthy, slightly bitter taste that balances beautifully with just a touch of sweetness.

• Experiment with Milk: 2% milk and oat milk adds creaminess, almond milk keeps it light, and coconut milk offers a tropical twist.

Customizing Your Latte: Flavour Variations to Try

Love to switch things up? Here are some fun ways to customize your Iced Matcha Latte:

• Vanilla Matcha Latte: Add a splash of vanilla extract for a warm, sweet note.

• Coconut Matcha Latte: Use coconut milk for a tropical twist.

• Mint Matcha Latte: Muddle fresh mint leaves for a refreshing kick.

• Matcha Protein Latte: Add a scoop of vanilla or unflavoured protein powder for a post-workout boost.

• Matcha Lemonade: Mix matcha with lemonade instead of milk for a zesty, refreshing summer drink.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

• Using Water That’s Too Hot: Boiling water can make matcha taste bitter. Aim for water around 175°F (80°C).

• Skipping the Sift: Unsifted matcha can lead to clumps in your drink.

• Not Whisking Enough: A quick stir isn’t enough—whisk vigorously to create that signature frothy layer.

Iced Matcha Latte FAQs

1. Can I make an Iced Matcha Latte without a whisk?

Yes! You can shake the matcha and hot water in a jar with a tight lid or use a milk frother.

2. Is matcha healthier than coffee?

Matcha offers a different set of benefits—calm, sustained energy, and a higher concentration of antioxidants. It’s not necessarily healthier, just different depending on your needs.

3. Can I make it ahead of time?

Yes, but for the freshest taste, it’s best enjoyed right after making. If prepping ahead, store it in the fridge for up to 24 hours and shake well before drinking.
