This creamy vanilla matcha protein latte is my homemade copycat-inspired version of the Tim Hortons Matcha Latte, made with simple ingredients for a delicious, protein-packed drink.

If you’ve ever looked at matcha and thought…
“Why is everyone willingly drinking green grass?”
You’re not alone.
That was honestly my first impression too.
Some days I absolutely love it. Other days I need a little convincing.
But when Tim Hortons released their new Matcha Latte, my curiosity got the better of me. I wanted to see what all the excitement was about, but I also wanted a version I could easily make at home.
So, I created my own copycat-inspired Tim Hortons Matcha Latte.
Now, this isn’t the official Tim Hortons recipe—just my homemade version inspired by the creamy vanilla flavour I was craving. I added vanilla yogurt, a little vanilla whey protein, and a touch of whipped cream to make it smoother, more satisfying, and a better fit for my goal of making healthier choices.
Because healthy living doesn’t mean you have to give up every little treat.
Sometimes it’s about finding simple swaps that make you feel good while still enjoying what you love.

What Is Matcha?
Matcha is a finely ground powder made from specially grown green tea leaves.
Unlike regular green tea, where you steep the leaves and throw them away, you’re actually drinking the whole leaf with matcha. That’s one of the reasons it’s become so popular with people looking for a simple wellness drink.
The flavour is definitely unique.
It has an earthy flavour that’s… well…
Let’s just say “freshly mowed lawn” isn’t the worst description I’ve heard.
But don’t let that scare you away.
When matcha is blended with creamy ingredients, vanilla, or a little sweetness, it becomes a completely different experience.
Does Matcha Have Caffeine?
Yes—but probably not in the way you’re used to with coffee.
Matcha contains caffeine, but many people find the energy feels smoother and more gradual than coffee.
Personally, I find matcha gives me a gentle boost without the same jitters or stomach discomfort I sometimes experience with coffee.
Health Canada and other health organizations generally recognize that up to 400 mg of caffeine per day as a safe limit for most healthy adults, although individual tolerance can vary.
What Does Matcha Taste Like?
Let’s address the green elephant in the room.
Matcha tastes earthy, slightly grassy even.
Some people love it immediately.
Some people feel like they’re drinking a garden.
I’m somewhere in the middle.
That’s exactly why I like adding vanilla yogurt and vanilla protein powder. They soften the earthy flavour while making the drink creamy and satisfying.
Does Matcha Quality Matter?
Absolutely.
The quality of your matcha can make a huge difference in both taste and colour.
Higher-quality organic matcha tends to have a smoother flavour, while lower-quality matcha can sometimes taste more bitter or overly grassy.
If you’re new to matcha, choosing a good-quality powder can make your first experience much more enjoyable.
Why Add Protein?
One thing I’ve been focusing on lately is getting more protein throughout the day. If you’re looking for another easy high-protein idea, you might also enjoy my Creamy Ranch Tuna Salad.
As we get older, protein becomes even more important for supporting muscle health and helping us feel satisfied between meals.
Adding vanilla whey protein turns this from “just a drink” into something that actually helps keep you going until your next meal.

Homemade Copycat Tim Hortons Matcha Latte (With Protein)
Ingredients
- 1 teaspoon organic matcha powder
- 1 tablespoon Activia vanilla yogurt
- 1 tablespoon GNC Vanilla Cream Whey Protein
- ¼ cup milk of your choice
- 1 tablespoon whipping cream
How To Make It
Blend the matcha powder, yogurt, protein powder, and milk until smooth.
Pour over ice into your favourite glass.
Whip the tablespoon of cream until lightly fluffy and spoon it over the top.
Honestly, the creamy topping is what takes this from a simple matcha drink to a little treat.

Nutrition at a Glance (Approximate)
The great news? According to my Lose It! app, this drink comes in at just 82 calories!
And yes—I still used the full-fat yogurt, milk, and a little whipping cream because I love the creaminess.
It’s a good reminder that enjoying flavour and making healthier choices can absolutely go hand in hand.
Can You Drink Matcha Every Day?
Absolutely! Enjoying matcha daily in moderation can fit into a balanced lifestyle. Research is also exploring its natural antioxidants and potential health benefits, which is one reason matcha has become so popular.
Like coffee, matcha contains caffeine, so it’s worth paying attention to how your body responds and your total caffeine intake throughout the day.
Personally, I prefer matcha’s energy compared to coffee. It feels like a slower, steadier boost that helps me stay focused without the same afternoon crash.
Of course, some days I want coffee.
Some days I want matcha.
Some days I want neither because I barely slept and I’m convinced only a nap will fix me.
Life is about balance.
Healthy Living Doesn’t Have To Be Perfect
One thing I’ve learned on my journey after 40 is that healthy habits don’t have to be complicated to make a difference.
Sometimes it’s choosing a protein-packed lunch.
Sometimes it’s going for a walk.
Sometimes it’s making yourself a pretty green drink that doesn’t taste nearly as grassy as you expected.
The goal isn’t perfection.
It’s creating healthy habits that actually fit your life.
Because the best routine is the one you’ll actually keep coming back to.

Have You Tried Matcha?
I’d love to know…
Are you team coffee, team matcha, or are you still trying to decide if matcha tastes amazing or like freshly cut grass?
Let me know in the comments—I have a feeling this one could start a debate.
