A simple, realistic night routine for slowing down, letting go of the day, and making your nights feel a little more peaceful.
August 19, 2026 | The Unscripted Femme
I love a night routine that makes me want to do absolutely nothing.
Not the “I should really use this quiet time to journal, stretch, read 30 pages, plan tomorrow, meditate and become a better version of myself” kind of nothing.
Just… nothing.
For a long time, I thought a good night routine had to be productive. I’d see those beautiful evening routines where someone somehow managed to make dinner from scratch, go for a walk, take a bath, do a full skincare routine, read a book, journal, stretch, prepare for the next day and be asleep by 9:30.
Meanwhile, at one point I was standing there in my kitchen at 8:47 wondering why there were still dishes in the sink.
So I’ve started thinking about my evenings a little differently for the last year.
My night routine isn’t about squeezing more out of the day. It’s about letting the day be over.
And honestly, it feels so luxurious.

My Simple Night Routine
It’s not complicated. There are no special products or elaborate rituals.
It’s just a few little things that help me move from doing to being.
FYI: These times are just a loose guide, not a schedule I follow perfectly every night. Some evenings move faster, some much slower, and sometimes I skip half of it altogether.
6:00 PM — Dinner, Without the Rush
Dinner is usually the point where I finally start to feel like work is behind me.
I make something simple, sit down and actually eat it rather than wandering around the kitchen taking bites while doing five other things.
Some nights dinner is healthy and thoughtfully planned.
Other nights it’s whatever I can pull together.
I’m learning that slow living doesn’t mean every meal has to look like it belongs in a cookbook.
Sometimes it’s just dinner.
And that’s good enough for me.
6:30 PM — Clean the Kitchen
I like waking up to a reasonably tidy kitchen, so this is one little evening habit I try to keep.
Nothing obsessive.
I load the dishwasher, wipe down the counters, put things back where they belong and call it a day.
There’s something oddly satisfying about knowing tomorrow-you get to walk into a clean kitchen.
A tiny gift from tonight-you.
7:00 PM — Step Outside for a Few Minutes
If the weather is nice, I like going outside for a little while.
Sometimes I sit on the deck.
Sometimes I wander around.
Sometimes I do absolutely nothing except look at the sky while lazing in our hot tub.
I think we underestimate how much we need these little pockets of time where nobody is asking anything from us.
No productivity.
No podcast.
No goal.
Just being outside.
7:30 PM — Shower, Skincare & Get Comfortable
This is when I officially change out of the clothes I wore for everyone else and into something comfortable.
Shower.
Skincare.
Brush my teeth.
Hair up.
Comfy clothes.
It’s such a small thing, but changing into pajamas has always felt like a physical signal that the day is winding down.
I’m done.
I don’t need to be anywhere.
I don’t need to accomplish anything else.
✨ A little something for tomorrow:
And if you’re someone who likes ending the day with a little positive thought for tomorrow, you might enjoy my collection of “have a good day” quotes.
8:00 PM — Reset Tomorrow, Just a Little
I like doing a very small reset before bed.
Not a giant “prepare for your most productive day ever” routine.
Just enough to make tomorrow morning easier.
I might check what I’m doing the next day, put something out that I need, make sure my bag is ready and tidy up anything that would annoy me in the morning.
Five or ten minutes. That’s it.
I don’t want to spend my entire evening preparing to have another busy day.
8:15 PM — Put the Phone Down… Mostly
I’m not going to pretend I spend my evenings sitting peacefully with a book while my phone is locked away in another room.
Sometimes I scroll.
Sometimes I watch something.
Sometimes I fall down an absolutely unnecessary internet rabbit hole about somebody renovating a tiny cottage in England.
You know how it goes.
But I do try to create a little distance from the constant noise.
Less news.
Less comparing.
Less checking what everyone else is doing.
The world will still be there tomorrow.
8:45 PM — A Little Something for Me
This part changes depending on the night.
Maybe I read a few pages.
Maybe I make tea.
Maybe I sit with my husband and talk about absolutely nothing important.
Maybe I write something down.
Maybe I just crawl into bed early.
I’ve stopped believing every evening needs to contain some kind of personal-development activity.
Sometimes taking care of yourself is reading a book.
Sometimes it’s watching your favourite show.
Sometimes it’s going to bed.
9:30 PM — Get Into Bed
This is my favourite part, because the house is quiet and the lights are low.
Everything that needed to happen today has happened.
And everything that didn’t?
Well… it can wait.
I might read for a little while or talk with my husband.
Sometimes my cat, Vanilla Bean, decides this is an excellent time to make herself comfortable somewhere completely inconvenient.
And that’s it, just the simple feeling that the day is finished.
I’m not trying to create the world’s most perfect sleep routine, but I do like ending the night quietly. There’s a reason winding down before bed is often recommended as part of good sleep habits, too.

Why I Like a Slower Night Routine
I think we’ve become very good at turning absolutely everything into something we need to do better.
Morning routines. Workout routines. Skincare routines. Sleep routines. Meal plans. Sunday resets.
Even our downtime somehow needs a purpose.
But does your evening really need to feel more productive?
All I want to do is feel like myself again.
I think there’s something beautiful about learning what actually makes us feel good instead of constantly chasing what we’re told should make us feel good.
For me, a slow evening is less about having the perfect routine and more about creating a little space between the day I just had and the day that’s coming next.
A place to breathe.
A place to be quiet.
A place where I don’t have to accomplish literally anything.
And some nights, I’ll do everything.
Other nights, I’ll do almost nothing.
There will be evenings when the kitchen isn’t clean, the laundry is sitting in a basket, I’m watching television far too late and skincare consists of washing my face and calling it a night.
Real life gets a vote too.
And I think that’s the whole point.
A slow living night routine isn’t another list of things to get right. It’s simply a gentle way of saying:
The day is done. You did enough. You can let yourself rest now.
And honestly, I think that’s a pretty good way to end a day.
What does your evening usually look like?
Are you a shower-and-bed-as-early-as-possible person?
A one-more-episode person?
Or the person who suddenly decides at 10 p.m. that tonight is definitely the night you’re going to reorganize the entire bathroom?
I have a feeling there are a lot of us in that last category.
