I Want to Feel Alive Again

A reflection on wanting to feel alive again after spending years being responsible, busy, and caught up in building a life—and finding your way back to the things that make you feel excited, free, and creative.

Somewhere between building a business, being responsible, taking care of things, making plans, paying bills and just getting through the years, I think I got very good at being a responsible version of myself.

So good that somewhere along the way, I forgot to ask who I actually was underneath all of it.

What do I love?

What makes me laugh?

Where did my creativity go?

What would I do if I didn’t have to make it productive or useful or turn it into something?

I think I’m trying to find that woman again.

I’ve written before about finding yourself again while being married, because I think it’s surprisingly easy to lose little pieces of yourself while you’re busy building a life with someone else. And apparently, there’s a whole lot more to this stage of life than simply having a “midlife crisis.” It’s actually a time when we start asking bigger questions about who we are and what we want. The American Psychological Association has an interesting take on that, too.

And I’ve also written about those moments when you look around at your life and think, I hate my life and I want to start over.

Maybe I don’t actually want to start over.

Maybe I just want to feel more like myself inside the life I’ve already built.

For years, running was one of the things that made me feel free. But chronic pain eventually took that away from me, and I think I lost a little piece of myself with it.

So my husband started saying, “Get on the bike!”

He wanted to help me find that spark again. To give me something that could make me feel that rush of freedom without asking my body to do something it can’t anymore.

The one who wants to get on a motorcycle and take the long way home. Who wants to turn the music up, do something a little reckless, change her mind, laugh until her stomach hurts and say screw it every once in a while.

The one who gets that little rush of excitement just because something feels fun.

I want goosebumps again.

That feeling you had as a kid when something was exciting and you couldn’t wait to do it.

Because maybe that’s part of what living is.

Not just building a good life.

Actually feeling alive inside it.

And maybe getting older isn’t about becoming less wild.

Maybe it’s finally having the freedom to let that part of yourself back out.
